Paper Lanterns

Somewhere above,
the stars shine
like paper lanterns
in the sky,
drifting with
the cosmic wind,
to destinations
unknown
to you or I.

Paper lanterns land,
or alight to the trees,
or skirt the ground
on the gentle breeze,
drifting toward
either you or me.

But,

paper lanterns,
please,
before you burn away,
let me write a message,
perhaps a whole page,
on your fragile paper,
so you can carry it away,

far into the deep expanse
of space.

There’s a star I wish
to meet, if only
I could stand her heat.

For now, this burning
message is all

I need.
